With 48 head in the pens at this third Annual National Pen Show, competition was strong. Congratulations go out to Gleannloch Farms of Barksdale, Texas on their “double win” – both Grand Champion Fullblood Bull and Female ! The Naturalean Show was a clean sweep for the Brewer Ranches, and their senior Herdsire “Coalminer” who is the sire of both the Grand & Reserve Champions in both the Bull and Female categories.

All though the numbers at the show were somewhat lower than other years, the quality of the stock was truly excellent in every category ! Judge Wright had his work cut out for him, especially in the Fullblood Bull divisions.

Congratulations are in order for each and every exhibitor at the 2003 National Pen Show – what a fine group of cattle !

Special Thanks go to Leisa Ley of Billings for her work in setting up the pen "maps" and for her service again as "Show Steward". As always, Leisa is a smiling, effective assistant - and helps to make the Show more fun for everyone.

The weather again this year was wonderful. Even the Texas cattle felt warm and happy – as the temperatures were record-breaking warm for October in Montana.

The NILE Show Staff were, as usual, very helpful. Connie Watts of the NILE also extends her “Thanks” to all the Piedmontese exhibitors, saying they are “the nicest group to work with !”

The Champions in each division receive a beautiful NILE Jacket, and Reserves in each category receive the NILE Vest, plus premium cash prizes are paid in all classes.

NAPA also reports this Show to the Italian Piedmontese Association – ANABORAPI – together with the photos of the various Champions. This is then published in the Italian International Breed magazine. Great advertising world-wide for the North American Piedmontese !

Our Jan, 2004 magazine “Your Piedmontese Voice” will showcase the Champions on the front cover…and here on the website, you can find various candid pictures from the event on the News Shows Sales page.

Speaking of “sales” – it is noteworthy that we had an entry at this Show in the Fullblood Female division, a nice cow-calf pair, which were available for sale by Private Treaty at the event. These animals arrived in Billings on Oct. 16th and within hours were sold. In fact, they were delivered to the new owners the same day and so were not a part of the Judged Show on Oct. 18th. The buyers were apparently there at the NILE to purchase breeding stock from a different breed, but when they learned of the attributes of the Piedmontese, they were keen to become involved !

Thanks go out to all the NAPA members who helped again at the Show and presented the breed in such a professional manner. It is always a pleasure to see you each year….Some came a great distance to participate, like Tom Shear and Udo Heusel from Wisconsin, and the Gleannloch Farms team from Texas. It is also a fair journey for John and Connie Snover of Nebraska and Jerry Hofer of Lake View and the Soukups from South Dakota ! Their efforts are greatly appreciated. For myself, I was especially happy to meet Travis Brook (our youngest NAPA member) and Colton Snover for the first time this year, as well as Barb & Jerry Ludeman of Montana and Josh Albert of Virginia...finally now I can put a face to the voice !
