1. Breeder requests sampling kits from the NAPA

2. The NAPA sends appropriate forms and generic sample collection kits to the breeder.

3. Breeders sample animals, fill out paperwork, and send it to MMIG with payment.

4. All samples will then be logged into MMIG’s laboratory information management system, receiving a unique sample ID.

5. A sample acknowledgement report is then sent to NAPA for their records. This report is used to correct any clerical errors.

6. Samples are processed through the lab.

DNA is extracted from the Cattle Card. This DNA is then amplified using a technique called PCR.The amplified DNA is then processed through a fluorescent-based capillary genetic analyzer. Each sample is then scored three times; once by an automated computer scoring system, once by a human technician and finally once by a supervisory level analyst. The genetic profile is then imported into MMI Genomics’ laboratory information management system (LIMS). The LIMS system compares each potential parent to each progeny and determines if an alleged parent is the true parent

7. A final report is then generated and sent electronically to the NAPA, with a hard copy to the breeder.

Important Notice:

If you wish to submit Hair Samples (or semen) rather than using the new FTA Cattle Cards, MMI will continue to offer DNA testing from hair samples, but at an increased fee. Fees charged by MMI for DNA and Myostatin testing using Hair Samples will be $ 48. per animal. Myostatin testing alone, using hair samples, will be $25. per animal. Fees charged by MMI for DNA and Myostatin testing using the FTA Cattle Cards will be $38. per animal. Myostatin testing alone, using the FTA cards, will be $15. per animal.
